Guest Explains 'Only True Way' For Mamdani To Lose According To New Poll

Political Analysis on New York Mayoral Race

On a recent episode of Mark Halperin’s political show, analyst John Podhoretz discussed the New York mayoral race, particularly focusing on socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani. He asserted that Mamdani’s only real chance of losing would be if current Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo exited the race.

This commentary came after Halperin cited a new poll showing Mamdani leading with 39% of the vote, compared to Cuomo at 21%, Republican Curtis Sliwa at 18%, and Adams trailing at 9%. During the discussion, Podhoretz encouraged both Adams and Cuomo to reconsider their candidacies to clear the path for the final showdown between Mamdani and Sliwa.

“This poll is interesting because it sheds light on Cuomo’s determination to stay in the race,” Podhoretz expressed. “After a disappointing initial vote count, I thought he’d withdraw, but this data suggests he sees himself as a viable candidate against Mamdani.” He added that if Cuomo maintains his presence, it complicates Mamdani’s chances.

Despite Mamdani winning the Democratic nomination in June, he has faced considerable pushback for his controversial policies, which include contentious remarks regarding “intifada globalization.” Some had speculated that Cuomo might bow out after a potential loss to Mamdani, but he confirmed in July that he would remain in contention.

Podhoretz noted, “For Mamdani to truly lose, Cuomo and Adams would need to withdraw, leaving Sliwa as the sole opponent, which seems unlikely.” Halperin chimed in, mentioning that for those concerned about a socialist victory, the best hope would be Cuomo.

According to Halperin’s new polling data—gathered from 500 voters between July 18 and 20—Mamdani garnered 54% support from Democrats, 23% from independents, and 5% from Republicans. Cuomo received 27% from Democrats, 19% from independents, and 10% from Republicans, while Sliwa had stronger support among Republicans at 70%.

The results indicated that Mamdani holds a 10-point lead over Adams and an 18-point lead over Sliwa. Interestingly, in a direct matchup with Cuomo, Mamdani appeared to be narrowing the gap slightly.

Mamdani is promoting several ambitious proposals, such as raising the minimum wage to $30 and introducing a government-run grocery store, which have attracted both support and criticism. Figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have endorsed his candidacy, while others, including notable Democrats like Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, have remained quiet on the issue.
