President Trump has reignited the discussion surrounding the name of Washington’s football team. This move seems to be part of his broader strategy to leverage sports for cultural influence during his second term.
In an unexpected twist, Trump threatened to intervene in the team’s plans for a new stadium in Washington, D.C., unless they considered reinstating the name “Redskins,” which was retired in 2020.
This caught local officials and team representatives off guard, adding yet another instance of Trump mixing sports with political topics.
“The president is very passionate about sports and he wants to see the team change its name back,” White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt mentioned recently. “It’s not unusual for him to engage in areas that most presidents typically don’t.”
During his initial six months in office, Trump hosted championship hockey and baseball teams at the White House and participated in events like the Daytona 500, Super Bowl, College Wrestling Championship, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
His meeting with members of the Boston Red Sox and Italian football club Juventus earned him some credibility, especially when the Red Sox went on to win consecutive championships afterward. He also played a key role in announcing that Washington would host the NFL Draft in 2027, alongside DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
People close to the White House have noted that Trump has always had a strong interest in sports, even owning a team in the defunct US Football League during the 1980s.
Some insiders believe this passion will broaden his political reach, especially after he threw a football into a crowd during a recent Iowa State event. He continues to assert his viewpoint on policy matters, like the debate surrounding trans women participating in men’s sports, which became a major campaign promise for 2024.
Plans for hosting next year’s FIFA World Cup have also been discussed, with a task force established to enhance transportation, visa processes, and overall logistics for players and fans.
Recently, Trump has made remarks about the Commanders’ name change back, dating back to 2013 when he criticized then-President Obama for the same issue. His comments seem to align with a broader stance he’s taken against what he considers politically correct culture.
He has suggested that if the team does not revert to the old name, he might obstruct their deal for a new stadium, despite indications from the team that they believe the issue is settled.
“Things are different now than they were a few years back. We live in a country filled with passion and, I think, common sense,” Trump posted on social media recently.
However, it’s unclear what power he has to block the stadium deal, which requires approval from the DC Council, with a hearing set for next week.
Mayor Bowser did downplay concerns that Trump’s recent actions would ultimately sabotage the long-planned stadium project. “I’ve spoken with the president about this site on various occasions,” she told ESPN. “I assured him that this site is probably the best he’s seen for a stadium.”
Feud Between Trump and DeSantis Heats Up
As for the fierce competition in the Republican primary for 2024, opinions vary on whether it’s easing. Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have exchanged barbs since early 2023 after DeSantis announced his candidacy.
Trump didn’t hold back when calling out DeSantis for being ungrateful for the support that helped him win the governorship in 2018. Recently, DeSantis has removed key Trump campaign staff from his team, heightening tensions.
Despite the past friction, the two men seem to have recently found common ground, with Trump visiting DeSantis in Florida. DeSantis remarked that they were working constructively together on immigration issues.
Even former animosities within their teams appear to be fading, as staff members express more neutral views about each other.
Yet, not everyone in Trump’s circle is on the same page. Some staff working on his campaign view DeSantis’ political ambitions skeptically. Trump’s former pollster, Tony Fabrizio, made headlines for a strong critique of DeSantis following social media speculations about the governor’s 2028 aspirations.
Fabrizio humorously referenced DeSantis’ alleged reputation for eating pudding with his fingers, a jab that has circulated since 2023.
This dynamic could further shape the landscape as the 2024 election approaches, adding yet another layer to the already complex political climate.
