New York Republican who escaped Soviet Ukraine cautions about Mamdani's socialism

Brooklyn, New York

NYC Republican Councillor Inna Vernikov has expressed concerns about Zohan Mamdani, a supporter of socialist ideologies, and his rising popularity among mayoral candidates.

Vernikov, who has roots in Soviet-Ukraine, reflected on his experience waiting in line for basic necessities with his grandfather, labeling Mamdani’s approach as reminiscent of a “previous experiment” in such systems.

“Looking at the Soviet Union, they made grand promises that ultimately enriched the government rather than the people,” he remarked. “I think we are seeing something similar here.”

When discussing Mamdani’s ascent in political circles after winning the Democratic primary in the nation’s largest city, Vernikov suggested that a sense of “guilt” among many voters was at play.

Mamdani has faced criticism regarding a “Communist” label, though he has sidestepped direct answers on this topic.

“In my view, we live in a culture of shame, especially after the George Floyd protests. There’s this embarrassment among some affluent white voters about their identity and wealth, which perhaps influences their decisions when voting for Mamdani,” Vernikov noted, emphasizing that it doesn’t appear to be a broad-based community engagement.

He pointed out that many of Mamdani’s younger supporters have never lived under communism or socialism. They grew up with privilege and might be naive enough to believe in the feasibility of these ideas.

Mamdani has stirred controversy, notably with his remarks on abolishing private property.

“These visions, in reality, tend not to materialize,” Vernikov stated. “What you might end up with is chaos—imagine lines for bread and police withdrawing. New York City as we know it could vanish.”

Still, Vernikov acknowledged Mamdani’s charisma and appeal, which he believes play a crucial role in Mamdani’s strategy for gaining support.

“He combines this compelling mix of promises and guilt, making for a powerful campaign,” Vernikov said.

Ultimately, he believes Mamdani’s platform is filled with unrealistic promises and categorically identifies him as “absolutely” a communist.

“He may identify as a socialist, but for me, the distinction doesn’t matter,” Vernikov concluded. “I see it as a threat to capitalism and a challenge to the principles of our democracy.”
