Bryson DeChambeau's 'awkward interaction' with a ball spotter at the British Open splits opinions among fans

Bryson DeChambeau found himself in the spotlight after a moment at the British Open last week. A clip shared by CBS Golf, titled “An unpleasant exchange between Bryson DeChambeau and the open ball spotter,” shows him inquiring about the location of his ball in the Royal Portrush rough. When staff pointed out the area, he thanked them, adding, “I can keep you out of the way.”

As he prepared to take his shot, many social media users reacted critically to the interaction. Some golf enthusiasts voiced their displeasure online, saying things like, “This is pathetic behavior no matter how rich you are,” and questioned if his demeanor revealed a deeper insincerity.

Despite the backlash, others defended him, suggesting that, perhaps, people were overreacting. One fan commented that the situation wasn’t as serious as it seemed. Another remarked that judgments often come from those who aren’t in the moment.

In terms of performance, DeChambeau finished in 10th place after a challenging 78 in the opening round. His reputation, though, has shifted in recent years from being one of golf’s more divisive figures to someone many fans appreciate, especially with his engaging YouTube content.

This year has had its ups and downs for him, marking a notable finish at the Masters before facing challenges at the US Open where he didn’t make the cut. Still, he showed resilience in Northern Ireland, feeling proud of his improved performance after a solid 7-under 64 in the final round.

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler captured the win at the British Open with a total score of 17 under, adding another major title to his season, following his PGA Championship victory in May.
