Pat McAfee Offers Apology
Pat McAfee has recently addressed a situation involving Mary Kate Cornett during a live episode of his show. This comes several months after he unintentionally contributed to a rumor about an 18-year-old Ole Miss student.
On February 26 of this year, while discussing the NFL Scouting Combine, McAfee acknowledged the confusion surrounding a story that had circulated extensively online. He admitted that the information was misleading and recognized the distress it caused, particularly to Mary Kate and her family.
“Through listening to the program, it’s clear I never want to be a source of negativity or add to someone else’s suffering,” McAfee said. He mentioned that he’s recently met with Mary Kate and her family, which was a positive step.
Mary Kate, along with her loved ones, has denied the damaging allegations that suggested she was involved with her boyfriend’s father. The rumors not only spread widely but also caught media attention, with accusations that McAfee amplified the gossip. However, Barstool Sports’ founder, Dave Portnoy, clarified that this gossip was never officially published by the company.
In an effort to address the situation, the Cornett family engaged legal representation and forensic investigators, filing complaints with campus police, local authorities, and even the FBI due to threats they received relating to McAfee and ESPN.
While McAfee commented on the incident previously, he had avoided going into specifics. This time, he took a more personal approach, meeting with the Cornett family to discuss the matter directly.
He expressed gratitude for the chance to convey his regret about the impact the show had on Mary Kate, saying, “As a father, I really appreciated speaking with Mr. Cornett and expressing my sorrow for the pain caused to my daughter.” McAfee recognized the public’s curiosity about why he hadn’t addressed the topic sooner but emphasized that there had been many developments behind the scenes.
Reflecting on the situation, he voiced his regret over the distress caused by the rumors. “Seeing and reading about it was tough for all of us,” he stated, hoping that this experience would foster learning and growth moving forward. “We certainly know that we have,” he concluded.
