Ex-Olympic gymnast describes USOPC transgender policy change as unclear.

Dee Wally, a former American gymnast, has voiced her concerns regarding the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and its new policies on transgender athletes in women’s sports. Recently, she suggested changes to align with President Trump’s executive order which seeks to “exclude men from women’s sports.”

Wally expressed to Fox News Digital that she finds the current policy “ambiguous” and lacking clear guidelines for transgender inclusion. Instead, it contains a single paragraph in its athlete safety guidelines that reflects Trump’s stance on the issue.

“I feel like they’re deliberately leaving things open-ended, which could undermine the fairness of competition,” Wally stated. She believes this flexibility is a response to the pressures of social movements.

Wally, who was part of the US national team in the late 1980s, has allied with other female athletes, including fencer Stephanie Turner, advocating for clearer gender policies in women’s sports. She suggested that significant progress won’t be seen until mandatory sex verification measures are adopted.

This calls to mind recent actions from the NCAA, which modified its gender eligibility rules earlier this year to comply with similar standards. Wally herself earned multiple national titles while competing at the University of Alabama and set impressive NCAA records during her collegiate career.

She also acknowledged that recent shifts within the USOPC show how societal pressures are influencing policies on transgender athletes in women’s sports. Wally previously criticized gymnastics icon Simone Biles for her remarks toward conservative activist Riley Gaines, asserting that the fallout has made it clear that people are willing to voice their opinions on this topic.

“The environment has changed. Individuals aren’t worried about being labeled negatively anymore; they want to stand up for what they believe is right,” Wally remarked, reflecting on the impact of social discourse.

Wally noted that Biles’s decision to delete her social media account may signify the growing weight of this ongoing conversation in women’s sports.

Other athletes have also remarked on the influence of the Gaines-Biles controversy regarding the USOPC’s policy changes. Turner stated that this discourse could drive significant change.

She pointed out that Biles represents a viewpoint that perhaps overlooks the sensitivity of the issue, emphasizing how this affects women in sports. Former NFL player Jack Brewer also weighed in, suggesting that the public response to the feud played a crucial role in shaping current policies.

“I believe the altercation highlighted a significant public sentiment, and I think Trump’s previous electoral success further ignited this conversation,” Brewer added, acknowledging Biles’s status as one of America’s greatest athletes while noting the controversy’s broader implications.
