Trump Unveils AI Strategic Action Plan
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump revealed the US’s new AI Strategic Action Plan, emphasizing a commitment to do “everything necessary” to secure global leadership in artificial intelligence.
This announcement builds on earlier initiatives, as Trump had previously authorized the creation of an AI action plan aimed at solidifying the country’s position in the AI arena and promoting a better future for Americans. Still, this latest move signals a more urgent push for advancement in this sector.
In his declaration, Trump set a 180-day timeline to devise a strategy that focuses on reinforcing America’s dominance in AI, all while benefiting human prosperity, economic viability, and national security.
During the announcement, he stated, “From this day forward, it will be US policy to do whatever it takes to lead the world in artificial intelligence.” He also introduced three presidential orders aimed at fostering innovation while reducing regulatory barriers around AI.
Moreover, the President pointed out that his administration plans to reduce regulatory hurdles that have historically stifled AI development, which he contends was an issue under the Biden administration.
“My administration will utilize every tool available to ensure that the United States develops and retains the most powerful and sophisticated AI infrastructure in the world,” Trump asserted.
White House Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratzos supported Trump’s stance, advocating for federal deregulation to facilitate AI innovation.
He explained, “The Action Plan seeks to free American AI innovation from unnecessary bureaucratic red tape so that all Americans can benefit from these technologies.” He added that the government is reviewing existing regulations to remove those impeding AI progress across various sectors, including finance, agriculture, health, and transportation.
Additionally, Trump’s Crypto Czar, David Sacks, detailed a three-pillar AI Action Plan, with the primary focus being ensuring that American workers are the ones benefiting from AI advancements. He also assured that AI systems should not be ideologically biased and that measures are in place to protect advanced technologies from misuse.
The announcement comes on the heels of Trump’s introduction of the Stargate project earlier this year, which entails a $500 billion investment commitment from major companies like OpenAI and Oracle towards bolstering American AI infrastructure over the next four years.
Currently, the US is in a competitive race against China, which is pouring resources into AI technology, aiming to grow its AI market to a whopping $1.4 trillion by 2030.
Moreover, there’s a plan for the US to establish a large AI data center, poised to enhance capabilities in computing power, data storage, processing, and overall infrastructure security.
On Tuesday, Oracle and OpenAI announced intentions to set up sizable data centers in the US, predicting that this venture could generate 4.5 gigawatts of data center capacity and potentially create around 100,000 jobs.
