Trump Expresses Support for Musk Amid Controversy
In a recent statement, President Trump clarified his stance regarding Elon Musk, indicating he has no intention of cutting off federal funding for the billionaire’s ventures. “I think people are worried that he might ruin his company by losing those huge subsidies from the government. That’s simply not true!” he shared on Truth Social.
Trump continued, expressing hope that Musk and all American companies would prosper. “The more success they find, the better it is for America. That’s beneficial for everyone involved,” he remarked.
This support comes shortly after Musk’s company, Xai, received a significant $200 million contract from the Department of Defense. Just days prior, Trump mentioned the federal funds for former allies were questionable, stating, “The easiest way to save billions is to eliminate Elon’s government subsidies and contracts.”
Musk is the mastermind behind several companies, including SpaceX, Tesla, and Neuralink. Over the years, the federal government has heavily collaborated with SpaceX for missions like transporting astronauts to the International Space Station and enhancing GPS technology.
For instance, in just April, SpaceX secured a whopping $5.9 billion deal from the Pentagon, while Musk’s Starlink Internet Services supports numerous federal operations.
Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president, noted that as of last November, the company had received a staggering $22 billion in government contracts.
While Trump previously instructed a review of SpaceX’s contracts for possible cuts, it turned out most of them were deemed essential, as reported by a recent Wall Street Journal article.
Tesla, too, benefits from electric vehicle subsidies, including incentives provided by states like California for companies that meet specific production goals. An estimate suggested that Tesla received around $11.4 billion from credit sales to other car manufacturers earlier this February.
The dynamic between Trump and Musk seems to have had its ups and downs recently, especially after Musk publicly criticized one of Trump’s initiatives after leaving his position as a government aide. Although they haven’t appeared together since, Trump remains open about the possibility of mending their relationship.
“Such things happen. I can’t entirely blame him, but yes, I’m a bit disappointed,” he said in an interview. “I believe we can get back on track, but first, we need to focus on improving the country. That’s my priority right now.”
