Tampa Bay Buccaneers Place Desmond Watson on Non-Football Injury List
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have put defensive tackle Desmond Watson on the non-football injury list, primarily due to concerns regarding his weight. Watson, who went undrafted, was signed after the 2025 NFL Draft at an impressive 6 feet 6 inches and weighing 464 pounds. Since then, he’s shed some weight, bringing it down to around 450 pounds, but it hasn’t been enough for him to join the training camp just yet.
Coach Todd Bowles addressed the situation on Wednesday, emphasizing the team’s focus on improving Watson’s health and ensuring he becomes a more effective player on the field. “It’s about making him better, becoming a healthier player and trying to get him on the field a little more,” he said.
Watson has potential, as he demonstrated his abilities during his four seasons with the Florida Gators, racking up 63 tackles and 1.5 sacks. “It’s like I’m here right now. He works for it, we work with him, and that’s all you can ask right now,” added Bowles, indicating the coach’s commitment to the player’s development.
Interestingly, Watson disclosed that one reason for his weight gain was the habit of stopping for food while driving around. “Stop while driving,” he noted when discussing the unhealthy choices he’s trying to change. “My biggest thing is going to where I need to get. I’ve got to avoid those gas stations,” he reflected.
If Watson eventually makes the roster and takes to the field, he could make NFL history by becoming the heaviest player ever to play in the league. It will be interesting to see how this situation evolves as the season progresses.
