The Steelers probably didn’t foresee this unfolding with Aaron Rodgers.
During the opening practice session in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the new Pittsburgh quarterback threw an interception on his very first attempt. Linebacker Patrick Green intercepted a pass aimed at wide receiver DK Metcalf.
Rodgers commented, “It’s good to get in the way.” He noted that anyone familiar with his practice style might want to test certain throws. “People who watch me play know I’ve been diligent with the football for years,” he added.
Rodgers signed a one-year contract worth $13.65 million with the Steelers back in June, and he connected with Metcalf during a 90-minute practice session which, reportedly, didn’t include any touchdown passes to tight end Darnell Washington or wide receiver Scotty Miller.
“DK and I trained together in the offseason and built a solid rapport,” the four-time MVP shared. “We discussed a lot about football and kept in touch through text during the offseason after camp, so our connection is strong.”
Metcalf, like the 41-year-old Rodgers, joined the Steelers after a trade from the Seahawks, where he had received two Pro Bowl selections.
The Steelers subsequently extended the 27-year-old receiver’s contract for five years, worth $150 million.
This offseason, Pittsburgh has been gearing up to finally win their first playoff game since January 2017 and vie for the championship.
Recently, the Steelers obtained Super Bowl-winning cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith from the Dolphins in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Rodgers’ pass was intercepted on the right side of the field.
Hints from Rodgers suggest that this coming season might be his last.
“I believe this is just a one-year deal. The Steelers didn’t look to commit beyond that,” he remarked in June during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
This offseason has marked a transition for Rodgers, who confirmed he was married “a few months” ago.
He had been involved with a woman named Brittany since December 2024.
The Steelers will kick off their season on the road against Rodgers’ former team, the Jets, on Sunday, September 7th.
