NYC mayoral candidate's pro-BDS position re-emerges in interview

Zohran Mamdani’s BDS Support Surfaces as NYC Mayoral Campaign Heats Up

A recently resurfaced interview from 2021 highlights Zohran Mamdani’s firm backing of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel as he campaigns for mayor of New York City, which notably has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel.

“I’m really excited to be part of the Democratic Socialists of America, especially the NYC chapter,” Mamdani expressed during a conversation with SAAG Interactive. He noted that candidates who align with the organization are probed about their views on BDS, pointing out how it influences local political dynamics.

In the interview conducted by journalist Naib Mian, Mamdani elaborated on his views regarding BDS, which seeks to impose economic pressure on Israel to address human rights concerns. “It’s not out of the ordinary to oppose occupation and apartheid,” he stated, framing his stance within the broader context of social justice.

Mamdani’s remarks resonate with his previous stand on campus, where he led efforts promoting Palestinian rights while stressing the need for academia to engage in this issue critically. His views include a belief that support for the BDS can be seen as part of a global movement for justice.

Interestingly, he also cautioned about the implications of his campaign for Jewish voters, as some local leaders worry that his election may alienate crucial voting blocs. Concern spins around safety and community dynamics, with some expressing fear over rising tensions.

Mamdani’s push for BDS has sparked criticism among Jewish communities, and his father, Mahmoud Mamdani, has also faced scrutiny for his stances related to the ongoing debates over Israel and Palestine. Despite the backlash, Mamdani maintains that BDS is integral to his political beliefs centered on a non-violent approach to justice for Palestinians.

He believes there’s still significant room for advocacy and support within his community for the Palestinian cause, stating, “I think we haven’t yet fully mobilized the support for the fight for justice.”

As tensions rise and the election approaches, Mamdani’s campaign continues to stir conversations about the intersection of politics, social justice, and local representation in a city that embodies a diverse tapestry of cultures and beliefs.
