Georgia Representative Mike Collins to Launch Senate Campaign

Republican Representative Mike Collins is set to announce his campaign for the U.S. Senate next week, according to a source familiar with the matter. Collins plans to challenge incumbent Senator John Ossoff in a critical southeastern state, which President Donald Trump narrowly won in the last election.

Political analysts within the GOP view Ossoff as the most vulnerable Democrat running for reelection in the upcoming midterms. Collins, a businessman who founded a trucking company, is currently serving his second term in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District.

Collins’ Political Background

The conservative lawmaker, who is the son of the late Republican Representative Mac Collins, has been gearing up for this Senate race for some time now. He posted on social media recently, remarking, “My tires were kicked. I’ll refuel,” alongside a video highlighting his relationship with Trump.

In the video, Trump praises Collins, stating, “Rep. Mike Collins, he loves this situation.” Collins has been a supporter of Trump since his initial presidential campaign in 2016.

Senate Race Dynamics

After Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, Collins actively participated in early voting primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. He also attended multiple Trump rallies and opened campaign offices supporting Trump in Georgia.

While Collins has faced little opposition in his House seat, he has campaigned to help select candidates who align with Trump in various Congressional districts across the country, as the GOP tries to maintain its slim majority.

This year, Collins reintroduced the Laken Riley Act, legislation requiring the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with theft or robbery. The bill was named after a Georgia nursing student who was tragically killed by an undocumented individual, and it quickly passed through the Republican-dominated House and Senate.

The Political Landscape in Georgia

Collins is reportedly on good terms with Trump and his political team. One Georgia Republican consultant noted that Collins is prepared to run in a lane that aligns well with Trump’s backing.

Despite efforts to recruit popular figures like Governor Brian Kemp for the Senate race, Kemp announced earlier this year that he would not seek the 2026 nomination.

Buddy Carter, a Republican representing Georgia’s coastal districts, has also entered the Senate race and is looking for Trump’s support.

John King, the Georgia Insurance Secretary, initially sought the Republican nomination but recently dropped out of the race. Additionally, Derek Dooley, a former college soccer coach, is contemplating a bid. Interestingly, he’s a longtime friend of Kemp.

Polling shows Collins maintaining an advantage over his Republican competitors for the party’s nomination. He will face off against Ossoff in the general election next year.

Despite Republicans targeting Ossoff as vulnerable, the challenge won’t be straightforward. Ossoff has reportedly raised over $15 million in a recent quarter and is drawing attention from Georgia Democrats.

In a critical statement, Democratic spokesman Devon Cruz questioned whether Collins truly represents the interests of Georgians, referencing his votes that affected health insurance for many in the state.

Collins is entering a competitive race that could shape the political landscape in Georgia.
