Justin Pugh Retires from NFL After 11 Seasons
Justin Pugh has announced his retirement from the NFL, concluding his career where it all began. After 11 seasons, he wrapped up the 2023-24 season with the Giants.
“A lot of players can’t leave the game on their own terms. After 11 years in the NFL, I’m officially retired,” Pugh shared with the media during a Giants Training Camp event.
At 34 years old, he had hoped to play another season but realized he “didn’t have it in the tank.” As he reflected, he noted, “I started losing weight, felt better, and just didn’t want to pursue my 12th year.”
For this last season, he mentioned, “I’ve been enjoying the stands with my fans.”
The Giants picked Pugh in the first round, 19th overall, during the 2013 NFL Draft. He was a part of the team for the first five years before signing a five-year deal with the Cardinals in 2018.
After spending another five years in Arizona, Pugh returned to the Giants in 2023 for what he called his farewell tour. Rejoining the team in October 2023, he experienced a sense of nostalgia during a “Sunday Night Football” intro, which, in his words, felt particularly significant.
Over the course of his last season, he played in 12 games. Pugh reminisced about his childhood dreams of playing in the NFL, saying, “Like many young boys, I always imagined making that big play or catch.” He reflected on how he never expected to be the one blocking for quarterbacks like Eli Manning or Kyler Murray.
“I feel like there’s not that little boy out there right now,” he added. “While everyone aims for those star positions, it’s the experience that truly shaped me as a man, a father, and a teammate.”
Pugh expressed gratitude for the journey, stating, “For the fans, it was a great ride. Thank you for all the support.”
