Pakistan Trade Deal Progress

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishak Dal, expressed optimism about nearing a trade agreement with the United States. Following a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Dal mentioned that the deal is “very close” to being finalized, although U.S. officials did not outline a specific timeline for completion.

“I think we’re quite close to finalizing our deal with the U.S.,” Dal stated during an event at the Atlantic Council. He noted that the Pakistani delegation is currently in Washington, engaging in virtual discussions. The Prime Minister has tasked their team with fine-tuning the agreement.

“It won’t be months, not even weeks, I’ll say,” he added, hinting at a sense of urgency.

Ongoing Trade Negotiations

Officials from the Trump administration have been busy renegotiating trade agreements, particularly in light of new tariffs imposed recently on various countries.

After the meeting, both the State Department and Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry underscored the significance of enhancing trade relations, especially regarding minerals and mining.

Uncertainty Surrounding U.S.-China Relations

While the discussions with Pakistan unfolded, President Trump was contemplating a potential meeting with China’s President Xi, which could influence ongoing tariff negotiations.

Interestingly, there was no mention of a timeline for the trade agreement in social media posts from Rubio or in statements from the State Department. However, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry acknowledged President Trump’s and Rubio’s crucial roles in promoting a ceasefire aimed at easing tensions with India.

This ceasefire, celebrated by Trump in a social media post, remains a point of contention, with India disputing the claim that U.S. intervention was a factor in its establishment.
