Men should adjust their expectations on dating apps, new research indicates.

There’s been this ongoing idea that a majority of women—about 80%—tend to seek out the top 20% of men on dating apps. However, recent research suggests that the issue may not be as straightforward as that. It seems that the real challenge lies with the dynamics of attraction, or more peculiarly, the costs associated with intimate encounters, like oral sex.

In a study involving nearly 3,000 heterosexual users on dating apps in the Czech Republic, researchers presented their findings earlier this week. These were published in PLOS 1.

The researchers observed that men often showed interest in women who they perceived as more desirable than themselves. Conversely, women typically gravitated towards men who were of similar desirability. It’s a fascinating turn of events.

To determine the desirability of the users involved, the researchers tracked the number of swipes each received. Interestingly, the male user pool was larger, which led to a conclusion that female users tended to rank higher within this context.

Even with a plethora of options at their disposal, the study found that women occasionally opted for partners who weren’t exactly the best fit, choosing somewhat less desirable matches instead.

Moreover, it indicated that successful match agreements often occurred within similar levels of desirability.

This leads to a sort of takeaway: men might do well to have realistic expectations about their desirability and not aim too high, which could help mitigate feelings of inadequacy and frustration while swiping through potential matches.

In summary, the study revealed that although men are likely to have lofty goals when it comes to making contact, the most fruitful matches generally happen among individuals with similar levels of appeal. It seems that rejection plays a significant role in shaping these preferences, rather than simply aiming for the next best thing.
