Former ABC Reporter Critiques Trump and Media Landscape
Terry Moran, a former ABC news reporter who was let go after voicing strong opinions on social media about President Trump and his aides, has drawn parallels between Trump and the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin. He argues that if Trump isn’t “stopped,” the freedom of the press in the US could be compromised.
This latest criticism came during an appearance on the Sassar Channel hosted by Chris Matthews, another former news anchor who left his regular show, “Hardball,” in 2020 amid allegations of inappropriate behavior towards women.
Moran was dismissed by ABC in June following a series of harsh social media posts targeting Trump and aide Stephen Miller, marking the end of his nearly three-decade career with the network.
His recent comments have sparked discussions about the perceived biases among reporters, especially in light of Matthews expressing concern over a recent CBS settlement that stirred debates.
Matthews inquired whether other networks might “cave” in to Trump’s influence. Moran responded by expressing concerns about the potential future of news departments, suggesting that they’re at risk of being dismantled. He underscored that authoritarian tactics seen in countries like Hungary and Russia often involve targeting independent media.
Moran referenced the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and commented on the implications of Trump’s presidency during a debate segment with Vice President Kamala Harris, asserting that the integrity of news is imperative.
“David Muir hasn’t erred,” he stated, but he emphasized that regulations governing news must serve the public interest, particularly as defined by the Trump administration.
He warned that if unchecked, there’s a likelihood of removing ownership from existing media companies.
Furthermore, Matthews criticized CBS’s “Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert,” calling it more of a “political thoughtful show” than traditional entertainment.
Moran shared that a publisher had expressed reluctance to publish a critical book about Trump, highlighting a climate of fear. “The shadows are long over our civil society,” he said, pointing to global precedents for such issues.
It seems Moran has had some hesitance towards criticizing Democrats too. “I think they have a unique challenge because it’s unclear what their message is anymore,” he remarked, pondering how they might address this uncertainty.
He didn’t shy away from discussing the Biden administration’s border policies, remarking on the significant influx of undocumented individuals and the implications of their asylum protocols.
