Inactive Bitcoin Whale Stirs After 14 Years, Transfers $469.8 Million in BTC

Bitcoin has seen a significant resurgence, with dormant addresses becoming active after more than 14 years. Recent chain data reveals that these “whales” have moved approximately $469.8 million in Bitcoin.

After nearly 14.5 years of inactivity, the wallet known as Bitcoin Zilla has reemerged. According to blockchain tracking platform Lookonchain, the value of Bitcoin involved in this action is around $469.8 million, given that the whales had not touched the funds since their last transaction on January 15, 2011.

During this lengthy period, Bitcoin’s price skyrocketed from about $0.393 to a staggering $118,561, translating to an astonishing profit of over 30,168,093%. These whales had originally accumulated their Bitcoin over just two days starting January 13, 2011.

Prior to accessing this large stash, a test transaction of $218 was executed. Although the wallet had been inactive for years, one must consider the risk of dust attacks, which involve sending tiny amounts of Bitcoin to a wallet to compromise its owner.

This incident follows a previous event less than a month prior, where 80,000 BTC were transferred after being dormant since April 2011, leading to speculation in the community. Coinbase director Conor Grogan had even hinted that the address could be tied to Bitcoin stolen from a hack.

Recently, Santiment, a cryptocurrency analytics platform, pointed out a slight decrease in Bitcoin holdings—over 1,000 BTC—amid a small price drop for Bitcoin.

The awakening of Bitcoin Zilla after so long has sparked conversations within the crypto community. Such movements from dormant addresses can lead to market speculation and increased volatility. The fact that this whale held Bitcoin for so many years, when its value was under a dollar, points to a strong, long-term belief in its potential.

This event also underscores the risks associated with dusting attacks, serving as a reminder for Bitcoin holders to remain vigilant about securing their wallets.
