Mayor Adams criticizes Cuomo for stepping down as governor amid sexual harassment investigation

Mayor Eric Adams Critiques Andrew Cuomo After Resignation

On Saturday, Mayor Eric Adams took aim at former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned amid sexual harassment allegations and is now eyeing a run for mayor as an independent candidate.

Adams, speaking at the 75th anniversary of the Bronx Community Center’s Neechach Bronx River House, noted Cuomo’s familial ties to political success, remarking, “His father was a great governor. His father did a great job with three terms.” He also emphasized that personal conflicts shouldn’t interfere with one’s responsibilities. “During my own challenges, I stepped up for the city,” he asserted, referencing how his own legal issues were dismissed earlier this year.

Cuomo has faced significant backlash for his administration’s controversial decision in 2020 to send COVID-19 patients to nursing homes, a move linked to approximately 15,000 deaths.

Adams, who is also running for reelection as an independent, accused Cuomo of attempting to undermine Black politicians. “This is his history; he uses the same playbook against my mayoral campaign,” Adams claimed.

Cuomo’s decision to enter the race as an independent followed a significant loss in the Democratic primary against Zoran Mamdani, a socialist candidate.

Adams continued to criticize Cuomo, suggesting he was pouring “salt into the wounds” of New Yorkers by spending millions to defend himself against sexual misconduct allegations. He lamented, “His records were painful for our city, and I had to fix his confusion.”

Cuomo, meanwhile, maintains that he was wrongfully accused and has denied claims that he manipulated nursing home death toll figures.

City Hall responded that Adams’ actions were a distraction. “He dropped out of the primary because the Democrats didn’t support him,” Cuomo retorted, expressing regret for not being clearer in his messaging during the primary campaign.

Cuomo remains optimistic about the upcoming general election, asserting that higher voter turnout will favor him. “I remained in the primary, and 400,000 Democrats voted for me,” he said. “The people who voted for me then will vote for me in November. There’s no new Andrew Cuomo.”
