As the trading deadline approaches on Thursday, the Yankees, like other teams, are looking to bolster their bullpen.
In a noteworthy game on Sunday, their relief pitchers significantly contributed to a narrow 4-3 victory over the Phillies, delivering 11 outs and preserving a one-run lead after Carlos Rodon was taken out again in the sixth inning.
“Sometimes, you just need things to click and maybe go on a little winning streak,” said Devin Williams, who pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 16th save. “It’s awesome to see everyone putting up zeros today.”
Williams, a two-time All-Star who’s in his first season with the Yankees, expressed uncertainty about any upcoming bullpen changes following the recent acquisition of infielder Aysel Rosario.
“I just show up and do my job. Brian Cashman will handle the rest,” Williams noted.
Manager Aaron Boone praised Williams, stating that he “has been as good as he’s ever been,” and the stats back that up. The right-hander hasn’t allowed a run in 24 of his last 29 appearances, holding a 2.28 ERA after he transitioned to a role behind Luke Weaver due to a sluggish start.
“I’m just pitching with confidence, and usually, I’m able to execute what I intend,” Williams shared.
Weaver also played a key role in the victory, going seven innings and keeping the opposing batters quiet.
He recently faced challenges, notably allowing a three-run home run to JT Realmuto in a previous game, contributing to a 12-5 loss.
“We’ve put a lot of pressure on ourselves to deliver in those crucial moments. Sometimes things come together, and sometimes they don’t,” Weaver said. “But you learn to move past the tough outings. We really needed this win today.”
Left-handed pitcher Tim Hill was also impressive, taking care of business against the top of the Phillies lineup, which included Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Bryce Harper.
This performance was a much-needed lift for the Yankees, who currently sit 22nd in MLB for bullpen ERA at 4.28.
“This is how you want it to look,” Boone remarked. “It’s really encouraging to see four guys come in and deliver against a strong lineup.”
