Dolly Parton Discusses Faith and Spirituality
Dolly Parton places significant importance on her spirituality, not something to gloss over. Over the years, the country music icon has been quite vocal about her faith, but in a recent chat with interviewer Lawrence Grobel, she expressed her deep feelings on the matter.
Grobel, known for interviewing many celebrities during his lengthy career, recently released diary entries that highlight his first meeting with Parton in 1978. These recount tales of their initial conversation, which revolved around various subjects, including his invitation to interview infamous serial killer Charles Manson in 1981.
Parton’s Caution with Manson
When Grobel pondered whether to go forward with the interview, he sought Parton’s advice. Her response was quite direct: “I think he stole your soul,” she remarked, indicating her discomfort with even looking at a photo of Manson.
Parton encouraged Grobel to reconsider the interview. “If you talk to him, I don’t want to be too close to you,” she added. She reflected that the narrative could inadvertently give notoriety to someone already infamous for his crimes.
“It’s a compelling story,” she acknowledged. “But, for just a moment, we can potentially ruin everything we’ve built with your spirit and my pure intent.” Talking about Manson, she mentioned the bravery required to deal with someone of his ilk.
Ultimately, Grobel chose not to interview Manson, noting in his diary that Parton influenced his decision significantly. He captured her caution vividly, stating, “If I’m going to dance with the devil, there’s no sugarcoating.” Though Manson wasn’t directly linked to Satan worship, his persona often invoked concepts tied to darkness and evil.
During Manson’s trial, he was known for bizarre statements and theatrical declarations that added an eerie aura to his presence. As Grobel recounted, Parton had a perceptible distaste for even the thought of engaging with someone labeled as “the embodiment of evil.”
Parton’s Enduring Faith
Parton has frequently articulated the influence of her faith on her creative endeavors. In 2023, she shared her belief that faith shapes everything she does, hoping for divine guidance to draw good people into her life and keep negativity at bay.
“I genuinely believe that everything’s possible with God,” she expressed, emphasizing her commitment to living through love. She considers her spirituality a guiding light, a creative force that’s sustained her over the years.
Recently, during her appearance on Khloe Kardashian’s podcast, Parton addressed criticisms regarding her openness about faith. “I think we should talk about it,” she replied when Kardashian mentioned some advised her otherwise. “This is what works for me.” Parton concluded that if she could reflect God’s light to others, that would fulfill her purpose.
