Trump Considers Shortening Deadline for Putin

In Washington, President Trump mentioned on Monday that he may reconsider the 50-day deadline he had previously set for Russian President Vladimir Putin to cease hostilities in Ukraine.

“I am disappointed in President Putin, very disappointed,” he expressed, just prior to meeting with British President Kiel Starmer in Scotland.

“So, I’ll have to reevaluate and perhaps reduce that 50 days I gave him,” he added.

Trump had initially warned Putin that he needed to negotiate a ceasefire within that timeframe or face severe secondary sanctions that could devastate the Russian economy even further.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has agreed to meet with Putin to discuss the end of the ongoing Three Years’ War, but the Kremlin has opted for an in-person meeting with the Russian president.

Although three rounds of discussions between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Turkey over the last few months haven’t produced a ceasefire, there have been some prisoner swaps.

In the meantime, Trump has reached out directly to Putin, trying to take on a mediation role in the conflict between him and Zelensky. He claimed that Putin expressed a desire to end the war but continued to order missile attacks on Ukraine.

“We thought things might have settled down several times. Yet, President Putin goes outside and launches missiles into cities like Kyiv, causing substantial casualties, including people in nursing homes. And I think, well, that’s not how you resolve this. So, we’ll see what unfolds,” he remarked.
