Cowboys executive discusses Micah Parsons' contract

Cowboys Face Key Decision on Micah Parsons

The Dallas Cowboys are heading into the 2025 season with a significant storyline, particularly concerning one of their standout defensive players. Micah Parsons is in the final year of his rookie contract, and his future with the team is up in the air.

Since he entered the league in 2021, Parsons has made quite an impact, notching up 256 tackles and an impressive 52.5 sacks across 63 games. Many would probably agree he’s been among the top edge rushers in the NFL.

So, a pressing question arises: why hasn’t he been paid yet?

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ executive vice president and CEO, weighed in on the situation while fans were urging team owner Jerry Jones to secure Parsons’ contract. “Nothing will change,” Stephen Jones remarked about fan frustrations. “We want to pay Micah too. He needs to want to be paid.” It’s a bit frustrating for fans, given that other top defensive players, like Miles Garrett and T.J. Watt, received hefty salaries recently. It seems Parsons is next in line, but will the Cowboys move quickly enough?

This offseason, Dallas also extended contracts for tight end Jake Ferguson and defensive tackle Osa Odiwuwa, which may create some tension regarding Parsons’ deal.

Regarding his contract, Parsons expressed some concerns over delays, mentioning that signing him later might cost the team more. He seemed to hope that the Cowboys would show “the same type of energy” as other organizations in committing to their star players. “If they don’t want me here, then they don’t want me here,” he said. “I understand the nature of the business. As long as I’m here and on a contract, I’ll do my part to perform. But if this is the end, well, then it’s the end.” It’s a bit of a mixed signal, which perhaps makes fans uneasy.

Currently, Parsons is participating in training camp in Oxnard, California, but he hasn’t been fully active in practice due to some back tension. That certainly adds another layer of uncertainty for both him and the team.
