Bubba Wallace Makes History at the Brickyard 400
Bubba Wallace, a vocal advocate within NASCAR, has become the first Black driver to win the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, achieving this milestone on Sunday.
This win followed a series of challenges, including worries regarding “lagging rain, two overtimes,” and fuel shortages for his competitor, Kyle Larson, as reported by CBS News.
It also marked Wallace’s first victory since 2022, ending a streak of 100 races without a win.
During the race, Larson initially trailed behind Wallace by over 5 seconds across 14 laps, but he managed to reduce the gap to just 3 seconds at one point.
The final margin of victory was a mere 0.222 seconds on Sunday. Larson was initially 5.057 seconds back over those laps; when the yellow flag waved due to rain, the gap had shrunk to about three seconds with only six seconds remaining. Four cars were in the pit lane, extending Wallace’s strategy by nearly 20 minutes, allowing him to reassess his approach.
Nonetheless, after overtaking Larson on the second turn, a crash behind them triggered a second overtime. This extended the race further, creating additional tension as Wallace’s team feared they might run out of fuel.
“This is really cool,” Wallace remarked, expressing his thoughts in an interview. “I knew I was close after Turn 4—as long as we didn’t run out of gas. I was actually surprised I wasn’t crying like a little baby.”
In June 2020, NASCAR made headlines when a rope was discovered in Wallace’s garage stall at Talladega Speedway, prompting major discussions about racism in the sport. Recalling that moment, Wallace stated it was a “painful reminder” of the pervasive issues in society. An FBI investigation later revealed that the rope was simply a pull rope and had been there prior to the incident.
Interestingly, Wallace had previously faced off with Larson during the NASCAR Cup Series South Point 400 in Las Vegas in October 2022. Following a crash where Larson attempted to pass him, Wallace retaliated by bumping Larson’s car. After that, tensions escalated as Wallace confronted Larson outside their vehicles.
