It seems Joel Embiid’s basketball journey might be nearing its end.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s radio, Keith Pompei from Philadelphia Inkwire voiced concerns that ongoing knee and back issues could prompt the former MVP to retire sooner than anticipated.
“I think Joel might be aware that his time is running out,” Pompei remarked. “It’s difficult to convey what he’s experiencing, as athletes usually don’t share the extent of their pain. I get the sense that Embiid understands that, even though it might not happen this season, his career is closer to its conclusion. Perhaps he feels he can’t perform at his previous level.”
Pompei noted, however, that he could be mistaken and that Embiid might still excel this season, but it’s not often players openly discuss their physical struggles.
At just 31 years old, Embiid’s career may already be winding down.
In a recent ESPN feature, as pointed out by Pompei, Embiid discussed his injuries and the mental health challenges that have arisen from them.
He mentioned how these recurring injuries have led him to question, “Why?” every year.
“I don’t know if I can do this again… I can’t keep at it for another minute,” Embiid shared, reflecting on his late-night treatment routines.
In various scenarios, the 76ers’ medical team has had to pull Embiid from pre-game activities, including a notable instance in 2024 when he couldn’t participate in warm-ups against the Pacers.
“I could sense the pressure. I felt I had to go out there because I didn’t want to let anyone down… that’s likely a factor in my current situation,” he said.
Later that same season, the 76ers faced the Knicks, and he spoke of how he felt in Game 6 of that series.
“I knew I could only manage two quarters… my body was just saying, ‘That’s enough.’”
The 76ers are heavily reliant on Embiid at this stage, and despite his challenges, he made a notable impact in the 19 games he played.
During the 2024-25 season, he averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists.
Since being drafted in 2014, Embiid has participated in just 452 out of 880 regular-season games.
Currently, he has a contract worth $193 million left over the next three years, including player options for the 2028-29 season.
