Peruvian President Faces Historic Low Approval Rating

This month, the Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte, recorded the lowest approval rating of her tenure, plummeting to just 1.3%. It’s quite a drop, really, starting the year at a mere 4% and experiencing a gradual decrease of about 0.5% monthly. Interestingly, it seems women are slightly more supportive; they show a 1.5% approval rate compared to just 1% from men.

Boluarte’s approval is particularly low among those aged 30 to 59, with only 0.9% giving her a nod. It makes you wonder what’s going on in that demographic, doesn’t it?

The poll was conducted by El Centro de Advictionión Reritorial Peru, utilizing door-to-door interviews with 1,200 people aged 18 to 70. They claim their findings reflect all social and economic groups.

Boluarte came into power in December 2022 after her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, was ousted and arrested over rebellion charges. Before his removal, she had promised to resign if it ever happened. Serving initially as vice president, she was part of the Free Peru party, rooted in Marxist ideology, but she has since distanced herself from those views.

Not long after she took office, the Ayacucho massacre occurred when protesters attempted to reach the airport, resulting in ten deaths and many injuries. Following this, the Peruvian Attorney General launched an investigation into her for suspected genocide and aggravated murder. Furthermore, two human rights organizations have urged the International Criminal Court to investigate Boluarte.
