Padilla’s Comments on Deportations Spark Confusion
California Senator Alex Padilla seems to have mistakenly suggested that mass deportations are causing a significant decline in pedestrian activity in Los Angeles. This remark came after he shared a video highlighting the reduced foot traffic in Boyle Heights on his X account.
As the Trump administration took a tougher stance on illegal immigration, cities like Los Angeles, known for their sanctuary policies, saw a notable rise in deportations. In a video posted over the weekend from Boyle Heights, Padilla indicated that the spike in deportations, beginning in June, has negatively impacted local businesses and pedestrian numbers.
In his video, Padilla stated, “Hello, this is Sen. Alex Padilla from Boyle Heights, just outside downtown Los Angeles. This area is one of Los Angeles’ most iconic and vibrant, typically bustling with activity. Yet now, many customers seem too fearful to shop.”
He continued, “For those looking to counter this crackdown from the Trump administration, consider protesting with your wallet. It’s important to support small and medium-sized immigrant-owned businesses in these diverse communities as part of our response.”
In early June, downtown Los Angeles was the scene of both riots and protests. Events escalated quickly, resulting in violent confrontations, damaged vehicles, and vandalism near federal buildings.
Despite the chaos resulting in significant financial damage, California Democrats remain staunch opponents of the Trump administration’s deportation efforts. On June 12, there was a notable incident when Padilla was asked to leave a press conference while attempting to pose questions during Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s address.
