Thomas Muller from Bayern Munich nearing agreement with Whitecaps in MLS

Thomas Muller, the legendary player from Bayern Munich, has reportedly signed a contract with Vancouver’s Whitecaps to join Major League Soccer. It’s been a significant shift for Muller, who has spent his entire career in the Bundesliga. Earlier this year, he considered a move to FC Cincinnati, but now he’s set on joining the Whitecaps.

There are only a few details left to finalize concerning the personal terms of the agreement. Interestingly, he will be signed starting in 2025, and while he won’t be classified as a designated player then, he might be in 2026.

This transfer is pending until Vancouver can negotiate a “right to discover” arrangement with Cincinnati, a deal Muller had previously secured. This “right to discover” allows teams in MLS the ability to negotiate first with certain players, and it’s estimated that Muller’s “right to discover” could cost Cincinnati around $400,000.

In a recent video, Muller mentioned that he’s looking forward to his new adventure “over the pond.” As he wraps up his current season, he has contributed eight goals and eight assists over 1,921 minutes of play.

During his prolific 16 years at Bayern Munich, Muller has achieved an impressive haul, including 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies. Throughout this time, he scored 250 goals and assisted on 223. On the international stage, he netted 10 goals across four World Cups and even won the Golden Boot in 2010.

The Whitecaps have had a strong season in MLS, although they experienced a small slump from June to July. Nonetheless, Muller’s arrival is expected to enhance their performance as they sit second in the Western Conference.
