Derek Jeter was upset about Boomer Esiason's comment on Old Timer's Day, according to Tiki Barber.

While he managed to stay composed around Derek Jeter during the event, Boomer Esiason did manage to ruffle some feathers with remarks about Jeter’s so-called “elitism” and questions surrounding his absence from the upcoming Old Timer’s Day.

The WFAN host and former Giants player made comments after discussing Jeter’s refusal to attend the celebration for CC Sabathia’s Hall of Fame induction over the weekend.

“Jeter remarked, ‘He should have called me,’ referring to Esiason. ‘Don’t speculate about me; talk to me.’ Clearly, he was irritated,” said Tiki Barber on a show with Evan Roberts.

This whole situation stems from Jeter’s decision not to join the Yankees’ Old Timer Day on August 9th, an event honoring the 2000 World Series Championship team.

Notably, this year’s event will include actual baseball games for the first time since 2019.

The following day, Esiason and his co-host Gregg Giannotti weighed in on Jeter’s choice to skip the event.

“Honestly, it’s kind of disrespectful… I feel he should be there; he ought to be part of it,” Esiason commented on “Boomer and Gio.” “It feels elitist to me.”

Giannotti also recalled Jeter saying at last year’s event that he wouldn’t participate in the games because he was concerned about injuring himself.

“Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio played in those classic games. If they could wear their uniforms, why can’t Jeter?” Esiason pointed out last week.

He further noted, “In my view, he was the captain; the fans accepted and adored him.” Clearly, such comments didn’t sit well with Jeter.

WFAN analyst Suzin Waldman indicated last week that Jeter’s absence is due to a birthday celebration for his daughter, a fact that Barber confirmed.

Barber recounted, “I asked Jeter about it. He said he had a birthday party for his kids.” It seems that was the reason for his absence after all.

When Roberts pressed Barber about the situation, Barber laughed, pointing out that Esiason had it wrong.

“He doesn’t care, honestly. He’ll go on and do his thing,” Barber said, stressing that Jeter didn’t take issue with the speculation. “You were wrong about him, and Boomer was definitely off base, which probably left Jeter a bit riled.”

He also highlighted that Esiason wasn’t entirely sure about his facts regarding Jeter’s situation but still chose to voice his opinion.

“Boomer, maybe just give him a call and actually listen,” Barber advised. “He’s not elitist.”
