New Season of “Shiny and Happy People” Explores Controversial Teenage Ministry

Prime Video’s popular series, Shiny and Happy People, is back for a new season with a different theme. This time, it dives into a teenage ministry that rose to prominence in the 1990s, stirring some debate along the way. The series, titled Shiny and Happy People: Teenage Holy War, premiered on July 23rd, focusing on an event called “Get a Fire,” which aims to inspire millions of teens through worship, drama, and teachings about living boldly for their faith.

Ron Luce, the founder of Teen Mania Ministries, is spotlighted in this series. He became a notable figure in Christian ministry and music, significantly impacting the youths involved.

The series taps into millennial nostalgia, blending moments of cringe with larger-than-life gatherings filled with teens drawn to religious rock music and promises of purity. It pictures a vibrant youth group, yet hints at a darker reality: a high-pressure pipeline resembling a spiritual boot camp, overseen by a charismatic leader driven by enormous ambition.

This three-part series features interviews with former participants and graduates.

Alumna Carrie Saum reflects on her experience, saying, “They were not appealing to our intelligence, our common sense, or even our spirits. Looking back, it was all about emotion, which is quite powerful medicine.”

One particular program, called Esoal, pushed participants to their limits with grueling tasks like mud crawling and military-style drills designed to foster emotional growth.

The first season was titled The Secret of the Dagger Family, which gained popularity as the top documentary series on Prime Video. It delved into the Duggar family’s rise to fame and their links to the Institute in Basic Life Principles.
