Investigation into Shane Tamura’s Brain for CTE Possible

Mayor Eric Adams announced on Tuesday that the brain of Shane Tamura, the shooter involved in a recent incident, may be evaluated for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

The city’s Chief Medical Examiner’s Office will decide whether to conduct tests on the 27-year-old former football player’s brain, Adams shared with CNN.

“I, me here, me here, and the medical inspector here will collaborate with the Manhattan District Attorney to figure out the next steps,” he said.

Shane Tamura, a high school football standout, left behind a note indicating he was experiencing a brain condition commonly linked to head trauma.

Although the medical inspector’s office has not confirmed a dedicated investigation into CTE, they mentioned that general brain examinations will take place during the autopsy.

Details of the Incident

  • Filming at 345 Park Ave. began around 6:28 PM.
  • Shane Tamura was seen exiting a black BMW between 51st and 52nd Avenue, armed with an M4 rifle.
  • He entered the lobby, where he shot police officer Didalur Islam, aged 36.
  • Tamura then fired at a woman behind a pillar in the lobby, continuing to shoot as he advanced towards the elevator.
  • Another individual was shot in the lobby, leaving him in critical but stable condition.
  • He allowed the woman to exit an elevator unharmed and made his way to the 33rd floor, where the office of Rudin Property is located.
  • A man was shot dead there before Tamura turned the gun on himself.
  • The duration of the chaos remains uncertain. Police Chief Jessica Tish noted at 7:52 PM that “the scene was contained and the only shooter neutralized.”

The medical examiner’s office has stated it cannot comment further on the ongoing investigation regarding CTE.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has also been asked for comments.
