Blue Jays Enhance Bullpen Before Trade Deadline
The Toronto Blue Jays have made a notable addition to their bullpen just a couple of days ahead of the MLB trading deadline.
They acquired reliever Seranthony Dominguez from the Orioles in exchange for pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown during Tuesday’s doubleheader.
Dominguez is well-known for his effectiveness, boasting an impressive average fastball speed of 97.8 mph. In fact, he ranks in the 94th percentile across the league.
At 30 years old, Dominguez, who was previously with the Phillies, has shown remarkable improvement this season. After a rough patch in 2024, he managed to cut down his home runs allowed from 2.4 per nine innings last year to just 0.9 this year.
Currently, he holds a 3.24 ERA alongside a 3.47 FIP, with 54 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings pitched.
This acquisition is crucial for a bullpen that sits at 17th in ERA at 3.94 and ranks 7th in WHIP at 1.23.
Recently, the Blue Jays have climbed to the top of the American League East, following a strong month. In addition to strengthening the bullpen, they previously added infielder Ryan McMahon from the Rockies, now holding a five-game lead over the Yankees, who also made waves by acquiring a player from the Nationals.
On the flip side, the Orioles dealt their second key reliever just last week, trading lefty Gregory Soto to the Mets.
After entering the season with high hopes following two consecutive postseason appearances and a promising young core, Baltimore now finds itself in a challenging situation. With a record of 49-58, they are currently at the bottom of the AL East, being the only team in the division under .500.
In exchange for Dominguez, the Orioles received Watts-Brown, who is rated as the 10th-best prospect in Toronto’s farm system according to MLB Pipeline.
Watts-Brown has made 11 starts in Double-A this year, sporting a 3.48 ERA and notching 53 strikeouts.
