Senate Confirms Sam Brown as Executive Director of Veterans Affairs
On Tuesday, the Senate approved another candidate put forth by President Donald Trump. This time, it was Sam Brown, tasked with managing the veterans’ cemetery and overseeing burial operations.
Brown, an Army veteran and former Nevada GOP Senate candidate, was confirmed with a vote of 54-44. Interestingly, two Democratic senators from Nevada, Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, broke party lines to support his confirmation.
The position of Secretary of Memorial Affairs, which Brown will hold, oversees the national cemetery administration, responsible for over 150 national cemeteries across the U.S. Approximately 4 million veterans are interred at these sites.
Additionally, the National Cemetery Bureau serves around 100,000 military veterans and eligible families each year.
Trump praised Brown, highlighting his military service and bravery, particularly noting that he was severely injured by an improvised explosive device during his service. In a post on his social media, Trump referred to Brown as an “American hero.”
Brown’s confirmation was one of several recent Senate appointments, as Trump faces delays put in place by Senate Democrats regarding his nominees for various agencies, judges, and ambassadors.
Republican leaders in the Senate are attempting to expedite the confirmation process despite the challenges, asserting that veterans’ issues should transcend party lines. Senator Jerry Moran, who chairs the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, had previously advocated for a quicker confirmation process, which was met with opposition from Democrats.
“This is not just a Republican issue; it’s about honoring our veterans and serving their families with dignity,” Moran stated, expressing frustration at the partisan pushback that has hindered the confirmation of Brown and others.
