Claim: Abusive words during gun control CNN’s In politics Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) stated that the shooter in Manhattan possessed a concealed carry permit that allowed him to carry an AR-15.
Verdict: This is misleading. Concealed carry permits are primarily meant for handguns, not rifles.
Moreover, possessing such a permit doesn’t override state laws for firearm possession. The shooter traveled to New York, where there is a ban on what Democrats term “assault weapons.”
Going further, even if one had a concealed carry permit linked to a rifle, New York has no recognition of concealed carry permits issued in the other 49 states, as noted by USCCA.
Additionally, when the news about the shooting was reported by Breitbart, it was mentioned that Mike Bloomberg is affiliated with Everytown for Gun Safety. New York is ranked fourth in the U.S. due to stringent gun control laws that prohibit “assault weapons.” Yet, the shooter utilized an AR-type rifle in Manhattan, distinct from what Democrats label as “attack weapons.”
While New York’s prohibition on “attack weapons” did not stop the shooting in Manhattan, Hochul suggested that a similar national ban would be essential for addressing crime effectively.
A parallel argument was voiced by Democrats during the Clinton era.
On September 13, 1994, a New York Times column pointed out that the term “assault weapons” was coined by Democrats in the 1990s to target politically defined categories of firearms. With increasing gun violence, Democrats sought to implement bans that could portray them as taking action against crime.
It seems like a recurring theme.
