The Dallas Cowboys: A Mixed Legacy

The Dallas Cowboys are still one of the most talked-about teams in American sports. Yet, Michael Wilbon, a former sports columnist and television commentator, recently advised that the hype surrounding “American teams” should be toned down a bit.

In their prime, particularly in the early 1990s when they won three Super Bowls, the Cowboys earned the title of “America’s Team.” They also clinched two championships in the 1970s and boasted a roster filled with prominent players.

However, it’s been a long road since their last Super Bowl victory in 1995. Since then, the team hasn’t even reached a conference championship, which is, well, quite a slump.

Still, that hasn’t kept the media from following the Cowboys’ journey. Wilbon mentioned that when January rolls around, Dallas might fade from the spotlight.

On a recent episode of “Absence of Forgiveness,” he commented about team owner Jerry Jones, saying, “The Cowboys, they’re not slow to do much.” He emphasized that by January, the Cowboys aren’t really of concern to many. He noted that while Jones dominates discussions, his actions often don’t serve the team well.

Wilbon openly admitted to tuning out Jones during press conferences, asserting that trying to make sense of what he says is generally pointless. “He likes to talk… a lot,” Wilbon remarked.

Despite the Cowboys’ struggles on the field for nearly three decades, their business operations are thriving. According to Forbes estimates for 2024, the Cowboys are valued at about $10.1 billion, making them the world’s most valuable sports team.

Currently, Jones is involved in delicate negotiations regarding a contract extension for linebacker Micah Parsons. This comes as the owner weighs the implications of possibly making Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league.

Interestingly, Jones experienced some fan pressure recently at training camp when supporters chanted “Re-sign Parsons.” He acknowledged their enthusiasm but made a comparison to past fan reactions regarding star receiver CeeDee Lamb.

“It’s bright, but I don’t compare it to the way they said, ‘Pay for the Lamb.’ Anyone can expect some things to shout about,” Jones mentioned, reflecting on last year’s chants.

The Cowboys wrapped up the last season with a disappointing 7-10 record.
