Travis Kelsey stepped in to defuse what could’ve escalated into a “cruel summer” at Chiefs Training Camp, breaking up a scuffle between lineman Josh Simmons and defensive player Ashton Guillott.
After a drill on Tuesday morning, tensions flared, and “bad blood” surfaced between the two, as shown in a video shared by KCTV. Simmons and Guillott exchanged punches and barbs.
The altercation was brief—just a few seconds—before teammates intervened, and Kelsey squeezed in between the players, helping to calm things down.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid also quickly took action to settle the situation, according to KCTV.
These kinds of squabbles have become somewhat common during training camp. At a different camp, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel issued a stern warning to players about unnecessary antics during practice.
“We aim to practice vigorously but within the rules. It’s essential we maintain that competitive spirit, finishing the play,” he remarked on Monday.
“Throwing a punch leads to an immediate ejection. This hurts the team, so I expect better from the players.”
Kelsey, a seasoned veteran and a key figure in the Chiefs’ locker room, took on a leadership role amidst the chaos.
Following his team’s Super Bowl loss to the Eagles in 2025, Kelsey reflected on his leadership in a “New Heights” podcast, admitting, “I sometimes doubt my ability to motivate, calm, and unify the guys.”
“Having been around for 12 years, I’ve seen a lot of football, and I’ve experienced situations just like this in the Super Bowl,” he added.
