Will McDonald IV eager for more after standout 2024 season

Wil McDonald IV’s Offseason Transformation

Wil McDonald IV is not completely satisfied with his breakout season in 2024 with the Jets, which has fueled a desire to improve. It’s funny how that works, right? Sometimes, a taste of success just makes you hungrier for more. In this case, it led him to focus on his diet.

This offseason, McDonald committed to adding weight—specifically, he gained 15 pounds—to enhance the versatility of his speed-based game. “I’m eating about six meals a day,” he mentioned after practice on Tuesday. “Eating the right stuff, everything. I’m seeing a few gains from that. Honestly, it’s been working.”

In his second NFL year, the 26-year-old McDonald emerged as the Jets’ leader with 10.5 sacks, showcasing his athletic prowess. But with his new added strength, he’s looking to elevate his game even further. It’s sort of like a pitcher who can throw an incredible fastball but struggles with off-speed pitches. Eventually, hitters catch on if that’s all you bring to the game.

Now, McDonald doesn’t want to just rely on beating offensive linemen with his speed. He feels confident that if they anticipate his speed rush, he can catch them off-guard with additional moves. “I’ve already added these new tools. Honestly, I hadn’t really utilized them before,” he said, describing the adjustments he’s making. “I had to revamp my entire approach. Sure, I’ve been known for my speed, spin moves, and the like. But once I have a tackle on their heels, that’s when I can unleash my newfound strength.”

He also reflected on his consistency last season, admitting, “I didn’t always have the kind of impact I wanted to make. If you’re not changing the game, you’re just not doing enough.”

Following a credible performance in 2024, many see McDonald as a cornerstone for the Jets’ defense, especially since the unit struggled last year, ranking 19th in points allowed. Only six teams had fewer turnovers, forcing just 17 throughout the season. It’s a situation where there’s a clear need for improvement.

Yet there’s optimism that the defensive group can rebound, particularly with McDonald stepping up. New coach Aaron Glenn has praised his work ethic, calling him someone “who wants to be coached hard.” Glenn added, “He’s a very talented player, and I’m expecting great things from him.”

McDonald expressed enthusiasm about working with his new coach, saying, “He treats me like family. I can’t say a lot, but I know he’s got my back.”

The Jets have the potential for a strong front four. With Quinnen Williams, another first-round pick, expected to return alongside defensive end Jermaine Johnson—who’s recovering from a torn Achilles—there’s hope for a formidable defense when they face off against the Steelers in Week 1.

In 2023, Johnson was named to the Pro Bowl, racking up 7.5 sacks in addition to 11 tackles. McDonald is ready to strike fear into opposing quarterbacks. “Jermaine and I are going to be ballers this season, and that’s all there is to it,” he stated firmly. “We have a solid trust in each other, ensuring we get the job done when we hit the field.”
