WNBA Finals rematch arrives for Liberty, but Lynx feel 'big miss' in the long wait

Excitement Builds for Lynx vs. Freedom Rematch

Minneapolis – It has been 282 days since Linkte clinched their first WNBA title by defeating Links in Game 5 of the finals.

Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve expressed her frustration, claiming that the championship was “stolen” from her team, while Commissioner Kathy Engelbert was spotted wearing the controversial New York Skyline dress.

As the 2024 WNBA season hits its midway point, Freedom has been displaying their flashy championship rings for nearly two and a half months. Yet, the much-anticipated rematch between the teams has yet to take place.

That all changes on Wednesday, as Freedom heads to Target Center to face off against the Lynx for the first time this season.

At first glance, it seems like the intense drama from last year’s thrilling series has faded. “It doesn’t feel like an honest rematch to me anymore,” commented Links star Nafisa Collier. “We’re in a new year now. Time flies; it’s almost August, and these two teams are at the top of their game.”

Both Collier and Reeve raised eyebrows at the WNBA’s scheduling decisions, questioning why this matchup was delayed.

Collier suggested that the Lynx should have squared off against Freedom right at the start of the season, perhaps even interrupting New York’s ring ceremony.

Reeve echoed Collier’s sentiments, describing the lack of matchups between the Lynx and Liberty as a “big mistake” for the league and its fans. “Common sense would say these two teams should have played early in the season,” she said.

Regardless, now it’s about uniting the league’s top two teams, both coming off disappointing losses. The Lynx (22-5) recently faced their first home defeat of the season, while Freedom (17-8) suffered an embarrassing loss to the Wings.

This game presents an opportunity for both teams to elevate their performance. “That’s exactly what you expect,” Reeve noted. “We all have high aspirations. They do, we do. When we compete against each other, it brings out the best.”
