Payton Sees Promise in Greenlow’s Play
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton made an interesting comparison last week regarding linebacker Dre Greenlow as training intensified.
Greenlow, who inked a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, is now back with the Broncos after participating in just two games last season. He faced challenges following an Achilles injury and had a tough outing during Super Bowl LVIII.
Payton expressed that Greenlow has already made quite an impression on him. “He plays like Mike Tyson,” he remarked to reporters. “He’s tough and physical. There’s not much leaky yard when he’s on the field. His tackling is something that really stands out.” Payton added that he views Greenlow’s physicality as a significant asset.
“You can’t miss how he plays when watching the film. His pad level, strength, and overall physical presence—incredibly impressive. It’s great to have him on the team,” he concluded.
Last season, Denver finished with a record of 10-7, boasting one of the top ten defenses in the league. They ranked third in points allowed and seventh in total yards. This performance helped protect cornerback Patrick Surtain II in the secondary.
As the season approaches, Greenlow is anticipated to take on a starting inside linebacker role, joining others like Jonathon Cooper, Alex Singleton, and Nick Bonitto in what’s being dubbed the Linebacker Legion.
The Broncos are set to kick off their season at home against the Tennessee Titans on September 7th.
