Israeli Ambassador Comments on Arab World and Hamas
On Wednesday, Israeli Ambassador Mike Huckabee remarked that the Arab world shows more resolve than Europe when dealing with Hamas. This commentary arose following a collective demand from Arab nations for Hamas to disarm and relinquish its authority in Gaza.
Huckabee’s observations came after Arab and Muslim countries condemned the attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023, signaling that the group has no viable future in Gaza.
Interestingly, while the European Union also endorsed the joint statement, it has recently faced criticism for its one-sided focus on Israel during a meeting about the potential two-state solution, which the U.S. and Israel did not attend.
Hours prior, British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer echoed calls from France and other European nations for the recognition of a Palestinian state, positioning it as a means to resolve the ongoing conflict with Israel, rather than addressing Hamas specifically.
Reports indicate that key Arab nations, such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, have called for the disarmament of Hamas to expedite the conclusion of the 21-month war between Israel and militant groups.
The Arab League, along with the European Union and 17 countries, noted that Hamas has nearly completed two decades of rule over Gaza, which has brought about a significant humanitarian crisis.
“To end the conflict in Gaza, Hamas must relinquish its power and surrender its weapons to Palestinian authorities,” the statement remarked.
In a striking development, the full Arab League has condemned Hamas for the first time since the October 7 incidents, pushing for a reevaluation of the group’s role in the region.
Despite these pressures, Hamas remains resistant to ceasefire agreements and insists on maintaining its political influence in Gaza. Currently, there are still around 50 Israeli hostages, with concerns that only about 20 might still be alive.
