During an interview on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump labeled the allegations surrounding Russiagate involving former President Barack Obama as “serious treason.” In a discussion with Tara Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, Gabbard accused Obama’s administration of fostering “unnatural tales” regarding Russia’s supposed interference in the 2016 election to support Trump.
Trump argued that the actions taken during that time were detrimental to the nation, emphasizing that the evidence was glaring and well-documented, with orders and notes clearly accessible. He criticized Obama for denying these claims and pointed to further troubling actions associated with the administration.
Trump remarked, “What he did was terrible,” referring to figures like John Brennan and James Clapper as “lightweights” who caused unnecessary complications. He expressed his belief that Attorney General Pam Bondy should pursue any legal ramifications stemming from Gabbard’s findings, which he stated indicate “serious treason.” While Gabbard’s supporters assert the documents imply the creation of a false narrative by the administration, critics contend they don’t necessarily expose any conspiratorial wrongdoing.
Trump admitted that all of this is complex, even noting that it ultimately depends on Bondy’s decisions in her role. He insisted that there were many questionable decisions made, suggesting they amounted to a form of rebellion and alleging that stories were fabricated.
When Devine asked whether Obama might have immunity and if others like Clapper and Comey should face consequences, Trump responded sharply. He characterized them all as dishonest, specifically calling Brennan perhaps the most culpable among them.
Obama’s office did not provide an immediate comment in response to the allegations. Brennan recently stated he was confused about why he was under investigation for reporting on potential misconduct associated with the Trump-Russia probes. Clapper, in another recent interview, dismissed the claims as “patently false and unfounded,” asserting that few intelligence products have been scrutinized as extensively as his own.
No responses were received from other officials implicated in Gabbard’s claims regarding the allegations.
