GOP Lawmakers Demand Accountability from Energy Department for Biden’s Green Loan Program

Concerns Raised Over Energy Department’s Loan Activities

Several Republican lawmakers have called on the Department of Energy (DOE) to clarify its actions under the Biden administration.

Representatives Rich McCormick from Georgia and Randy Weber from Texas, along with other GOP lawmakers, sent a letter to the DOE’s deputy inspector and deputy secretary on Wednesday. They requested a formal briefing regarding the activities of the Loan Program Office (LPO). Under President Biden, the LPO has approved a significant loan package amounting to billions for green energy firms. Critics allege these approvals were made quickly, and some were described as “inappropriately reviewed” selections tied to Democratic contributors or connected to prominent DOE officials.

“Billions have gone to companies closely tied to political interests under past administrations, and taxpayers deserve answers,” Babin remarked, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in federal lending. As chair of the committee, he wants to know what measures the DOE is employing to combat previous fraud.

Members of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee—including Babin, McCormick, and Weber—highlight potential conflicts involving the LPO, which has lent considerable sums to firms associated with former director Jigar Shah and former energy secretary Jennifer Granholm.

The letter mentions Sunnova, a struggling solar firm accused of mishandling client interactions, which was approved for a $3 billion partial loan guarantee before the Trump administration’s withdrawal of funds. This allocation was once deemed the largest government loan commitment to a solar energy project.

Lawmakers also reference ties between Sunnova and a board member of CleanTech, a green energy nonprofit established by Shah.

Further concerns arise over a $1.6 billion loan for Plug Power, which some argue lacked adequate financial backing from generating capital.

Moreover, the letter points out that numerous companies contributed to Granholm’s gubernatorial campaign and then received LPO loans. These firms include DTE Energy and Consumer Energy, which almost secured conditional loan guarantees totaling over $14 billion.

The Loan Program Office, created in 2005 to facilitate green energy development, saw increased activity under the Biden administration, contrasting its quieter periods during Trump’s presidency. While the administration has committed hundreds of billions to the LPO, questions linger about accountability and oversight—especially given prior criticism concerning the DOE’s management of taxpayer risks.

As of now, Sunnova, DTE Energy, Consumer Energy, and Plug Power have yet to respond to requests for comments.
