Regina Spektor Addresses Protest During Concert
Grammy-nominated artist Regina Spektor handled disruptive pro-Palestinian protesters with a clever yet composed remark at her concert in Portland, Oregon.
On Saturday, a few loud hecklers attempted to interrupt her performance, loudly expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments. However, the Russian-American singer-songwriter effectively silenced these interruptions without missing a beat.
She stated, “This is not the comment section on the internet. I know you’re mistaking my show for a YouTube video.”
During the performance at Revolution Hall, one audience member shouted, “Free f***ing Palestine!” Another concert-goer joined in, encouraging, “Free, free Palestine! Say it!” This led Spektor to pause her performance.
In response, she remarked, “You’re just screaming at the Jews.” A bit bewildered, she continued, “I don’t know what he thinks he’s doing.” The crowd responded with applause, showing support for Spektor.
Grateful, she acknowledged security, saying, “When I said ‘Shalom Aleichem’ last night, we really struggled. It means ‘Be peace with you.’” Some concertgoers echoed, “Am Israel Chai,” which translates to “The people of Israel are alive.”
The venue lights were turned on to find the heckler, and Spektor questioned, “Where are you?” She added, “I thought this was different than the Internet. This is real life.”
When interruptions continued, she suggested, “You can leave the show if you want. This is not the comment section of the internet.” A protester countered, “I’m watching dying children. That hurts.” To this, Spektor replied, “I think you should go because this is not the place for that conversation. I came here to play music.”
Some members of the audience chose to leave as tension escalated. Spektor, who immigrated from the former Soviet Union as a child, reflected, “The only reason I speak English is because I came here. I wish one of my generations did not have to go to a new country and learn a new language.”
The majority of those in attendance supported Spektor during the incident. Following the October 7th attacks by Hamas, she expressed her solidarity with Israelis, stating, “I am not indifferent to the suffering of Jews and Palestinians… I will keep hope and peace within myself, and send love to you… Am Israel Chai.”
In a more recent statement, she conveyed her sorrow, noting her heart has “ample space… for innocent Palestinians who have been murdered, raped, and kidnapped.” She also criticized the Israeli government but emphasized that it doesn’t represent all Israelis or Jews worldwide.
Spektor asserted that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East that allows for freedom of expression, voting, and the safety of LGBTQ individuals.
Her performance on the anniversary of the Hamas attack saw her at a Pro-Israel gathering in NYC, further highlighting her commitment to the complexities of the situation.
