Foo Fighters appoint Ilan Rubin as their new drummer after letting go of Josh Freese

Foo Fighters Find New Drummer

Reports suggest that the Foo Fighters have selected a new drummer, just two months after parting ways with Josh Freese. According to sources, the band has tapped Iran Rubin, who is 37, to take over the drumming duties.

Rubin has an extensive background, having toured with Nine Inch Nails since 2009 and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with them in 2020.

In addition to his work with Nine Inch Nails, he has played for bands like Angels & Airwaves, Paramore, and collaborated with notable composer Danny Elfman.

Meanwhile, after being let go by the Foo Fighters in May, Freese is reportedly set to join Nine Inch Nails as their new drummer.

The current situation raises questions about whether Rubin will be a permanent member or just a touring drummer for the Foo Fighters.

Interestingly, Rubin mentioned to Trent Reznor, the frontman of Nine Inch Nails, that he’s accepted a new position with another band.

Nine Inch Nails recently shared a photo of Freese on their Instagram Stories, captioned simply, “f-go,” which has intrigued fans of both bands.

Social media reactions have been lively, with fans commenting on the swap of drummers. One fan noted that it looked like a positive situation for both, while another wondered if there’s any tension between the bands. Someone else called attention to Rubin’s impressive drumming skills.

Back in May, Freese shared on social media that the Foo Fighters had decided to move in a different direction regarding their drummer. He expressed his gratitude for the time spent with the band since joining in 2023, following the unexpected passing of Taylor Hawkins.

Although taken aback by the band’s decision, Freese indicated that he wasn’t overly concerned about his next steps. He mentioned that he has never been let go from a band in his lengthy 40-year career and expressed a mix of shock and disappointment over the situation.

Freese also highlighted his freelance work, reassuring fans that he would be fine as he navigates through various musical opportunities. He humorously hinted at a potential list called, “Josh’s top 10 reasons launched from the Foo Fighters list.”

Having previously played with Nine Inch Nails from late 2005 to 2008, Freese’s return is quite significant, symbolizing a kind of reunion for the band. His diverse experience includes drumming for A Perfect Circle and serving with the band Devo from 1989 to 1996.
