Mariners Make Big Move Ahead of Trade Deadline
The Seattle Mariners are shaking things up in their roster with a significant trade aimed at boosting their chances for the World Series this fall. Reports are surfacing that they have struck a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks to bring in slugging third baseman Eugenio Suarez. However, the team hasn’t officially confirmed the trade yet.
Suarez was one of the most sought-after players in the lead-up to the trade deadline. He’s had a strong season so far, hitting 36 home runs and accumulating 87 RBIs with a batting average of .248 over 105 games. Interestingly, he’s also had a history of striking out—leading the American League with over 200 strikeouts in 2023 alone. Previously, he played for the Mariners in 2022 and 2023, hitting a total of 58 home runs during his time there.
Now, he’s joining a Mariners lineup that already features several other power hitters, including Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors with 41 home runs, alongside Randy Arozarena and Julio Rodriguez.
Seattle’s current record stands at 57-52 after a recent loss to the Athletics. Despite some ups and downs, they are just five games behind the Houston Astros in the American League East and only 1.5 games away from the second wild card spot currently occupied by the Boston Red Sox. Adding Suarez could provide the extra offensive punch the Mariners might need as they push for a postseason spot.
On the flip side, the Diamondbacks are in sell mode with a subpar record of 51-58. In this deal, they are expected to acquire first baseman Tyler Locklear, along with pitchers Juan Burgos and Hanton Clanton.
