Brittney Griner thrown out for colliding with referee in heated moment

Britney Griner didn’t hold back and wrapped up her game early on Wednesday night.

The WNBA star faced some drama, earning two technical fouls just moments apart during the third quarter of her team’s 88-85 road win.

From the camera angle, it was tough to tell if Griner actually made contact with referee Angelica Safren, but it seems she reached out while trying to break up some tension.

This incident happened while the Dream led 44-43, following a foul called on Griner during a rebounding scramble.

Griner, 34, approached Safren and let her frustrations be known, resulting in a technical foul.

Safren tried to move away from Griner, but the Dream staff intervened, attempting to keep the situation from escalating.

However, their efforts didn’t quite pan out.

As Griner followed the referee, Safren accidentally collided with her, leading to Griner’s ejection from the game.

Some broadcasts mentioned Griner’s contact with the referee, while it appeared the staff had touched Safren to deescalate things.

Griner exited the court but turned her head back to the referee, visibly upset.

She finished the night with a quiet stat line—just 4 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes of play.

This season has been challenging for her, recording career-low averages in points (10.6), minutes (23.3), and rebounds (5.6).

Earlier in the season, Griner faced scrutiny after a broadcast showed her reacting on the bench, particularly during an incident with Kate Clark.

There was speculation over whether she used an inappropriate term while referring to Clark, but Griner denied it, saying, “I don’t use that language, so I know that’s not the case.”

Despite her struggles, the Dream have shown some resilience. With Wednesday’s victory, they improved to a 16-11 record, just half a game shy of the second seed in the playoffs.
