MLB Trade Buzz: Athletics Deal Mason Miller to Padres
The 2023 MLB trade deadline is witnessing significant action, especially with a recent trade involving two West Coast teams.
The Oakland Athletics have traded All-Star closer Mason Miller and starting pitcher JP Sears to the San Diego Padres. In return, the Padres are sending several prospects, including three minor league pitchers to the Athletics.
Earlier this week, there were whispers about Miller being on the trading block, and by late Wednesday, it became clear that the Padres were seriously pursuing him.
This move is quite bold for the Padres. They currently hold a three-game lead for the final wild card spot but are also just three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the competitive NL West.
Miller’s performance speaks volumes. He made his MLB debut this year but really caught attention last season, posting a 2.49 ERA with an impressive 14.4 strikeouts per nine innings. He was selected as an All-Star last season, and this is his first full year in the majors. His fastball has recorded speeds up to 104.1 mph, averaging around 101.1 mph, making him one of the quickest pitchers in the league.
Interestingly, while his strikeout rate is an impressive 39.1%, he does rank in the lower 10% for walk rates, which is worth noting. His time to the plate has also increased to 3.76 seconds compared to last year.
Padres Seek Reinforcements
The Padres are clearly doubling down on their playoff ambitions with this trade.
In addition to Miller, the Athletics have acquired some noteworthy talent, including shortstop Leo de Vries, an 18-year-old signed by the Padres last year for $4.2 million. De Vries recently represented San Diego in the MLB All-Star Futures Game held in Atlanta.
This year’s trade deadline appears to be a significant one, with many teams making moves to either bolster their roster or gear up for the future. Mason Miller’s shift to the Padres definitely puts him at the forefront as one of the most talked-about players this season.
