Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate for mayor in New York City, considers one of his key achievements as a council member to be the allocation of taxpayer money for unemployment benefits aimed at undocumented immigrants. “I think the main win this year in Albany was the Excluded Workers Fund, created for those undocumented workers who’ve been excluded from both federal and state unemployment support,” he mentioned during an interview in June 2021 as a lawmaker in Queens.
He elaborated that this fund offers some much-needed relief, largely due to the pressure from individuals who, unfortunately, the state overlooks. “Without the pressure from these individuals, I don’t think state representatives would’ve taken action. Without that push, nothing would have changed, and no mercy would be shown,” Mamdani said.
His campaign website highlights his intention to advocate for immigration-related laws that support undocumented immigrants in major U.S. cities.
He also criticized Donald Trump’s impact on New York City. According to him, Trump has disrupted the city’s fabric during his second term, using harsh tactics like deploying ICE agents that have led to family separations. Prices, he argued, have escalated due to tariffs, and essential social services that many New Yorkers rely on have come under threat. Mamdani asserted, “He extracts ICE from urban facilities, overrides cooperation agreements, and seeks to endanger personal data protection.”
Recently unearthed writings from Mamdani’s university days revealed his support for boycotts against Israel and his opposition to “white privileges,” which may align with his broader platform.
Concerns have been raised about his response—or lack thereof—regarding a recent violent incident involving a customs border guard at a New York park. Critics feel his silence on this matter reveals misplaced priorities, suggesting a failure to prioritize public safety and the well-being of American citizens.
