Troy Taylor Files Lawsuit Against ESPN and Reporter

Troy Taylor, the former head coach of Stanford’s football team, has taken legal action against ESPN and reporter Xuan Thai. He claims that a story published prior to his firing by Stanford’s general manager, Andrew Luck, has damaged his reputation.

The lawsuit alleges that Thai made repeated false statements about Taylor, with the intent to harm his professional standing. Taylor asserts that these claims were untrue and aimed at tarnishing his image.

The controversial report, which emerged in mid-March, accused Taylor of bullying and disrespecting female athletic staff members. It referenced two investigations from 2023 and 2024 initiated after multiple employees lodged complaints regarding his behavior.

A follow-up piece published in April, shortly after Taylor’s dismissal, revealed that the original investigation had only one complaint to start with. Investigators concluded that there was “inadequate evidence” concerning the allegations against him.

ESPN later clarified that the investigation had expanded to include interviews with at least 20 members of the Stanford Athletics Department regarding four allegations against Taylor. This was a crucial point in the narrative.

Andrew Luck, who became the program’s general manager in November 2024, was aware of some of the details surrounding Taylor’s situation before he took the role. Reports indicate that he did not act until the ESPN story was published.

In March, Luck noted, “It was clear that certain aspects of the program needed to change.” He stated that there had been significant focus on Taylor’s investigation over the years and suggested a need for a reset within the program. His comments hinted at the belief that Taylor was not the right fit moving forward.

During his two seasons at the helm, Taylor’s tenure was less than successful, with the Cardinal finishing with a disappointing 3-9 record in consecutive years. Before arriving at Stanford, he had a successful run with Sacramento State, guiding the team to playoff appearances in each of his three seasons there.
