Shannon Sharpe’s Legal Situation
Shannon Sharpe is not linked to lawyer Tony Buzbee.
After a lawsuit was filed, Sharpe accused the prominent attorney—who had represented his rape accuser—of “targeting black men.”
“I woke up one morning and didn’t say, ‘I want to sue Shannon Sharpe.’ He has no connection to my life,” Buzbee stated in an interview, about two weeks after Sharpe’s accuser sought $50 million, a case that ended with a settlement of an undisclosed amount.
“In fact, I think he’s very funny when he screams, or talks about sports that he’s not involved in,” he added.
Buzbee has previously filed lawsuits against notable figures such as Jay-Z, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Deshaun Watson before representing clients against Sharpe.
These are just a few high-profile cases in Buzbee’s career; he notably sued BP over an oil spill, resulting in damages exceeding $500 million.
“I think a lot of older people might say I’m targeting them, and I could argue I’m targeting multinationals as well… I think I can claim I’m targeting BP,” he remarked. “If I feel there’s a valid case, I’ll go after it.”
Sharpe accused Buzbee of misrepresenting a recording released in April, where he claimed Buzbee only shared a 30-second clip of a longer, 10-minute video that he argued would clear him of any wrongdoing.
After the difficulties, ESPN severed ties with the Hall of Fame tight end who had officially retired on Wednesday.
While Sharpe had issues with Buzbee, his lawyer Michael Marino hinted that a respectful relationship among lawyers contributed to the resolution.
Marino commented on the settlement, saying, “Like many very successful individuals, Tony Buzbee is a complex and intimidating person. Though Shannon Sharpe stood on the opposite side legally, his shared history as a former US Marine ensured a mutual respect that facilitated our discussions.”
