Recap of Season 2 Episode 7 of The Buccaneers: "All Rise"

Episode Recap: “All Rise” from Buccaneers

The seventh episode of Buccaneers brings us back six weeks after the tragic events unfolded, including Richard’s death caused by his brother James, and Ginny’s escape from his grasp. Instead of a traditional funeral, the story opts for a gathering of friends and family to honor Richard’s life through a service ceremony.

Right from the start, you can sense the tension. Richard’s widow, Conchita, is focused on making a joyful life for their daughter, Minnie. However, Mrs. Breitlings, steeped in her traditions, is seen enforcing the idea that everyone should wear black. When Conchita arrives at a beautifully decorated wake, her presence stirs emotions among the Brightlingsea attendees.

It’s clear that Mrs. Breitlings disapproves of Conchita’s parenting choices and her decision to move forward after Richard’s death. As Conchita comforts her crying daughter during the service, her feelings bubble over. She boldly asserts that Minnie is a living tribute to Richard, challenging the religious aspects of the ceremony by stating, “God did not do this.”

After last week’s events, it was a bit of a mystery how Conchita would respond to Ginny, and it’s evident that she somewhat attributes blame to Ginny for her husband’s fate. During the memorial, Ginny questions Conchita about her anger, marking the first real moment of vulnerability from her. Conchita expresses frustration with her friends who seem to treat her like a widow. She vows to support Conchita through her grief, promising that forgiveness will come in time. Interestingly enough, by the end of the episode, Conchita reaches out with a peace offering—a fruit and cheese platter.

Conchita also extends her kindness to Honoria, who is struggling under her mother’s oppressive influence and grieving the loss of her sons. Honoria feels as though her dreams are slipping away, but when she shares a letter and an old stuffed animal from her brother with Conchita, it leads to a moment of understanding, reassuring her that she’s not alone in this.

This promise offers some relief for Honoria. When she announces her intention to leave England, Mrs. Breitlings is taken aback, feeling challenged by the unexpected news. Honoria shares a passionate kiss with Mabel, leaving Mrs. Breitlings in stunned silence while Conchita and Ginny—who seem oblivious to the unfolding drama—look on with excitement.

Meanwhile, Lizzie spends limited time with Theo, but their quiet interactions don’t escape Hector’s notice, who still harbors feelings for his ex-fiancée. His father, Liede, hopes for a wedding reschedule, but upon witnessing the soft exchanges between Theo and Lizzie, he realizes the situation might be more complicated than he thought.

This emotional reunion serves as a backdrop for Douger and Duke to confront their issues. A careless remark from Mrs. Breitlings about her son’s loss prompts Duke to reconsider his feelings. He boldly declares his love for Lizzie and questions why his mother hasn’t pursued her true feelings after his father’s death. Mrs. Breitlings reassures him that he is her priority, and that alone is enough for Duke to forgive her.

Meanwhile, Nan is not present for Richard’s memorial. She’s focused on supporting her mother amid divorce proceedings in New York, which seem to dominate her storyline. Patty’s legal battles highlight the lack of respect and protection for women during that era, especially with Nan’s father hiring an ineffective lawyer, leading to humiliating moments in court.

In typical Nan fashion, she believes her presence will help her mother find freedom. Upon taking the stand, she hints that Patty is not her biological mother. However, her credibility crumbles under intense scrutiny from the opposing counsel, further brimming the tension in their troubled relationship. Only Nell, Patty’s younger sister, is aware of the truth surrounding Nan’s parentage.

But Patty is not eager for Nell to intervene, especially as she is newly married and pregnant. Initially, Nell remains silent, causing frustration for Nan, who accuses her of cowardice. Nevertheless, Nan’s accusations prompt Nell to eventually take a stand in court, confirming her as Nan’s natural mother. With this revelation, it solidifies Patty’s case in the divorce proceedings.

Throughout these intense developments, a man has crossed the Atlantic to support Nan. Their reunion is tender and reminiscent of their earlier connection from season one, filled with a sense of hope and potential for moving past their challenges together.

However, Nan’s happiness is short-lived. Upon her return to England, she unexpectedly finds earrings matching those she had discovered at Tintagel. Mabel confirms they belong to Lizzie, and a wave of betrayal washes over Nan. Before she can process this, Guy arrives with Paloma in hand, introducing himself playfully as “the man’s wife.” The emerging conflicts raise questions about how far Nan might go to reclaim a sense of control in the upcoming finale.
